Thoughts on Christmas Songs
It's that time of the year… well, actually, it's been that "time of the year" since just before Thanksgiving when all of the stores and some of the radio stations started entertaining us with Christmas music. But I must confess… I love Christmas music and have no qualms about hearing it play and have been listening to our local Christmas music radio station since mid-November. There are, however, some lyrics to a few songs that just make me go "huh"…
Song - It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Lyric - "There'll be scary ghost stories"
Pondering - Why, why will there be scary ghost stories? Never have I ever been told scary ghost stories at Christmastime.
Song - The Christmas Song
Lyric - "And so I'm offering this simple phrase, to kids from one to ninety-two"
Pondering - What’s the deal if you’re 93 or older? Do you not get wished a "Merry Christmas"? That seems cruel.
Song - Do You Hear What I Hear
Lyric - "A child, a child shivers in the cold, let us bring him silver and gold"
Pondering - The child is SHIVERING in the cold! I think a more appropriate gift would be a down blanket or even a fleece snuggie for Christ's sake (pun intended).
Song - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Lyric - "Then I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus, underneath his beard so snowy white"
Pondering - Where exactly was she tickling? Just how long is this beard of Santa's?
Song - Sleigh Ride
Lyric - "There's a happy feeling nothing in the world can buy, when they pass around the coffee and the pumpkin pie"
Pondering - I'm not a big fan of coffee but IF I were, I could still think of things that would far out-produce happy feelings besides coffee and pumpkin pie; and I actually like pumpkin pie. However I will say that this statement makes me sort of wish times were simpler and that trivial things such as coffee and pumpkin pie would bring on immense happy feelings.
Song - Home for the Holidays
Lyric - "From Atlantic to Pacific, gee the traffic is terrific"
Pondering - I know this song is old and way back when I'm sure the traffic was not like it is today, but come on… really? … was traffic REALLY terrific?
'Twas the Night Before Christmas"
Line - "When what to my wandering eyes should appear, but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer"
Pondering - Why is the sleigh and reindeer tiny?
Do YOU have any amusing thoughts to add to this list??
